First published in 1973, this narrative history of the Mexica traces their migration into the Valley of Mexico, the founding of Tenochtitlan, and the rise of a Triple Alliance empire through the reigns of Motecuhzoma I, Axayacatl, Tizoc, Ahuitzotl, and Motecuhzoma II. Davies follows dynastic feud, tribute, and the fragile diplomacy that a small Spanish force later exploited. He writes from the indigenous political record as well as from conquistador testimony, and he continues past 1521 to the decline of the native nobility under colonial rule. The book is a consecutive political history, not a catalogue of Aztec art and not an archaeological site guide.
