Written out by hand in 1864 as a gift manuscript, this is Carroll's first, shorter telling of Alice's fall underground after she follows a White Rabbit. Underground she grows and shrinks, swims in a pool of tears, meets a caterpillar, plays a savage game of croquet with the Queen of Hearts, hears the Mock Turtle's story, and is drawn into a trial. Carroll's own drawings accompany the text. Several episodes later expanded for the 1865 Wonderland-most notably the Mad Hatter's tea-party and the Cheshire Cat-are absent or only sketched. The work is the underground tale in its original compact form.
