Synopsis
Published in 1925, this novel follows three generations of the Artamanov family, mill-owning merchants in a provincial Russian town from the emancipation of the serfs to the Revolution. Ilya founds the works; his sons Pyotr and Alexei inherit a growing factory and a household of uneasy marriages, workers, and rivals. Later years bring strikes, a new generation, and the collapse of the family's hold on the town. The book is a family chronicle of Russian private industry's rise and fall, not a battlefield account of 1917 and not a factory tract.
