The Arrow of Gold

A Story Between Two Notes

By Joseph Conrad · 2005

Synopsis

First published in 1919, this novel is narrated by Monsieur George, a young sailor in 1870s Marseilles who is drawn into a Carlist plot to run guns to Spain. He falls in love with Dona Rita de Lastaola, the cause's wealthy supporter, a woman already claimed by political patrons and by a violent former protector. Dominic Cervoni and a circle of conspirators, journalists, and hangers-on fill the port. A duel and the title ornament - a gold arrow worn in Rita's hair - gather the private and political claims on her. The book is a first-person story of infatuation and intrigue, not a history of the Carlist wars.
