Aristocrats
The Story of Caroline, Emily, Louisa and Sarah Lennox, 1740-1832
By Stella Tillyard · 2007
Back to CatalogueThis group biography follows four daughters of the second Duke of Richmond - Caroline Fox, Emily Lennox, Louisa Conolly, and Sarah Lennox - through the second half of the eighteenth century. Raised at Richmond House and Goodwood, they marry into Fox, Leinster, and Irish country-house circles and spend their lives between London, Castletown, and Carton. The narrative uses their letters to track politics around Henry Fox and Charles James Fox, the strain of arranged and passionate matches, childbearing, and the Irish dimension of a Whig clan. It is a study of one aristocratic sisterhood's private correspondence, not a general history of the British peerage.
