First published in 1865 as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this novel follows a child named Alice who, bored on a riverbank, follows a clothed White Rabbit down a hole into a world of unstable size, language, and authority. She meets the Caterpillar, the Duchess, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and March Hare at tea, and the Queen of Hearts, whose croquet and court of justice refuse ordinary rules. Animals and playing-cards talk; puns and lessons go wrong. The book is a dream-logic satire of Victorian manners and schooling, distinct from the shorter handwritten underground tale that preceded it.
