Synopsis

This collection gathers Jewish writings that stand outside the Hebrew canon but appear in the Greek Septuagint and, in varying lists, in Christian Bibles. Narrative books include Tobit, Judith, and the Maccabean histories of resistance to Hellenistic rule. Wisdom books include the Wisdom of Solomon and Ecclesiasticus. Additions expand Esther and Daniel with further prayers, court scenes, and the stories of Susanna and Bel. Baruch and the Letter of Jeremiah continue the prophetic manner. The volume is a body of late Second Temple narrative, wisdom, and history, not the core Law and Prophets and not a single continuous novel.
