Synopsis
This novel follows two Jewish cousins in New York from the late 1930s through the war years and after. Josef Kavalier, an artist and amateur magician escaped from Prague, and Sammy Clay, a Brooklyn writer, invent a comic-book hero and enter the early industry of superhero magazines. Their work, friendships, loves, and the fate of family left in Europe run alongside the rise of the comics business. The book is a historical novel of art, exile, and popular entertainment, not a history of the comic-book industry.
