The Amateur Emigrant and the Silverado Squatters
By Robert Louis Stevenson · 1991
Back to CatalogueThis volume pairs two late-nineteenth-century travel narratives. The Amateur Emigrant, written after Stevenson's 1879 crossing, describes steerage and second-cabin life from the Clyde to New York and the emigrant train west to California, where he goes to join Fanny Osbourne. The Silverado Squatters, first published in 1883, recounts the couple's stay in a derelict silver-mine cabin on Mount Saint Helena in the Napa valley: climate, neighbors, abandoned works, and the look of a spent boom. Together the pieces are personal travel writing, not a guide to emigration law and not a novel.
