This is a single-volume history of the Second World War, from the late 1930s through 1945, written from the level of soldiers, civilians, and local communities as well as of high command. Hastings moves among European, Pacific, African, and Eastern Front campaigns, using letters, diaries, and official records to show hunger, occupation, bombing, and combat. Axis and Allied experience are both included. The book is a narrative survey of the whole war, not a biography of any commander and not a purely operational staff study.
