This novel follows Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd who dreams of treasure at the Egyptian pyramids and leaves his flock to pursue an omen. He meets a king, a crystal merchant in Tangier, an Englishman, a desert woman named Fatima, and an alchemist who speaks of a Personal Legend and the Soul of the World. The journey runs from Spain across North Africa into the Sahara. The book is a short allegorical quest novel about desire and omen, not a manual of historical alchemy and not a travelogue.
