The Age of Wonder

How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science

By Richard Holmes · 2015

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This history follows British science in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when exploration, astronomy, and chemistry were bound up with Romantic writing. Holmes centres on Joseph Banks and Pacific voyaging, William and Caroline Herschel and the mapping of the sky, and Humphry Davy's chemistry and public lectures, with Coleridge, the Shelleys, and other writers at the edges. The book treats discovery as a cultural event as well as a technical one. It is a group portrait of an age of science, not a textbook and not a single biography.
