Synopsis
First published in 1920, this novel is set among wealthy New York families of the 1870s. Newland Archer, a young lawyer, is about to marry May Welland when her cousin Ellen Olenska returns from a failed European marriage and becomes the object of his divided loyalty. The clan's rules about divorce, duty, and appearances close around all three. The book is a study of a closed social world and a thwarted attachment, not a chronicle of the Gilded Age's public events.
