First published in 1954, this book interleaves recipes with memoir of cooking and housekeeping in the life Alice B. Toklas shared with Gertrude Stein in Paris and in the French countryside. Dishes-French provincial food, American imports, and the notorious hashish fudge-are set beside accounts of markets, guests, servants, travel, and the years of the German Occupation. Friends from the Stein salon appear at the table. The recipes are workable instructions; the surrounding prose is a domestic history of two households and the meals that organised them. It is a cookery book that uses food to tell a particular expatriate life.
