Synopsis
First published in 1876, this novel follows Tom Sawyer, a boy in the Mississippi river town of St Petersburg, through school, church, a graveyard scare, a murder he witnesses with Huck Finn, and a search for treasure in a cave. Aunt Polly, Becky Thatcher, Injun Joe, and the other children of the town fill a story of play that keeps turning into real danger. The book is a comic and suspenseful boys' novel of a river community, not a sequel to Huckleberry Finn and not a memoir of Twain's childhood.
