First collected in 1892, these twelve short stories follow Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson from Baker Street through cases brought by clients, the police, and chance. Typical problems include a hidden royal scandal, a club that exists only to occupy a pawnbroker, a dying sister's last words about a speckled band, a vanished bridegroom, and jewels used as leverage. Holmes observes, disguises himself, and explains the method at the end of each case. The pieces are independent detective stories set in late-Victorian London and the nearby shires, not a continuous novel and not a biography of a real investigator.
