First published in 1973, this biography follows Alexander of Macedon from the court of Philip II through the conquest of the Persian Empire and the campaigns that reached India. Lane Fox uses Arrian, Plutarch, and the other ancient narratives, reading them against geography and what is known of Macedonian kingship, logistics, and religion. The book covers the Greek campaign, Issus, Egypt, Gaugamela, the destruction of Persepolis, the eastern satrapies, the Hyphasis mutiny, and the return to Babylon. It is a narrative of one man's wars and a study of how those wars can still be known from partisan and late sources.
