This five-volume history traces the European great-power system from the revolutions of 1848 through the aftermath of the Second World War. The first two volumes follow the diplomatic struggle for mastery on the continent, from the post-1848 settlements through Bismarck's wars to the alignments that produced 1914. The third treats the First World War and the peace that followed. The fourth examines how the 1919 settlement, revisionist states, and the diplomacy of the 1930s led to another general war. The fifth covers 1939 to 1948: the Second World War, the collapse of German power, and the opening of the postwar order.
