First published in 1884-85, this novel is narrated by Huck Finn, who fakes his own death to escape his father and floats down the Mississippi on a raft with Jim, an enslaved man running for freedom. They meet feuding families, frauds, and river towns whose codes of honour and piety Huck only half understands. The book is a first-person river narrative about flight, friendship, and the moral pressure of a slave society, not a simple boys' adventure sequel to Tom Sawyer.
