Bertie Wooster, having quarrelled with his valet Jeeves over a banjolele, decamps to a seaside cottage and is immediately entangled with his friend Chuffy, the American heiress Pauline Stoker, her explosive father, and the blackface musical ambitions of the crooner J. Washburn Stoker's circle. A broken engagement, a missing fire-bucket, a nocturnal mix-up of bedrooms, and Bertie's disastrous attempt at independent scheming drive the farce. Jeeves, though dismissed, continues to rearrange the pieces. The novel is comic plot machinery set among idle rich Englishmen and visiting Americans, with no stakes beyond reputation, romance, and whether Bertie can get through the weekend without arrest or marriage.
