Tess of the D'Urbervilles
A Pure Woman, Faithfully Presented
By Thomas Hardy · 2007
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1891, this novel follows Tess Durbeyfield, a poor Vale of Blackmoor girl whose family, hearing of a claim to D'Urberville blood, sends her to the rich Stoke-D'Urbervilles. Alec's pursuit, a later love for the clergyman's son Angel Clare, and farm labour in Dorset shape her life. Hardy sets the story among dairy, harvest, and stone-country work, and against the sexual and class rules that judge Tess more harshly than the men. The book is a rural tragic novel, not a romance of restored gentry.
