Synopsis
First published in 1934, this novel follows Dick Diver, an American psychiatrist, and his wife Nicole as they move through the French Riviera, Paris, and Swiss clinics in the years after the Great War. Their marriage, funded by Nicole's family, is strained by her illness, Dick's work and drinking, and the arrival of Rosemary Hoyt, a young actress. Friends from the expatriate set orbit a couple whose charm is also a form of caretaking. The book is a study of a marriage and a profession under pressure, not a war novel.
