First published in 1919, this is John Reed's first-person report of the October Revolution in Petrograd in 1917. Reed, an American journalist, records the fall of the Provisional Government, the Smolny headquarters, street crowds, soviet debates, and the taking of the Winter Palace as he saw and heard them. Lenin, Trotsky, Kerensky, and factory and soldier delegates appear as speakers in a fast political crisis. The book is eyewitness political reportage of those days, not a later archival history of the whole civil war.
