This history treats the 1942 battles around El Alamein in Egypt, where the British Eighth Army under Montgomery fought Rommel's Axis forces in the Western Desert. Ball reconstructs the military course of the fighting-mines, artillery, infantry, and armour in a narrow coastal corridor-and then follows how the victory was written, filmed, and argued over afterward. He uses contemporary sources, including records of captured Axis officers, to separate the battle as it was fought from the later legend. The book is both a campaign study and an account of Alamein's afterlife in British and German memory.
