This novel returns to the islands of Earthsea years after the earlier books. Tenar, once a priestess and later companion of the archmage Ged, lives as a widow on Gont and takes in a burned, silent child called Therru. Ged arrives stripped of his power; together they face local cruelty, leftover wizardry, and the question of who may hold magic in a world that has treated women and damaged children as lesser. The book is a domestic and political continuation of the Earthsea cycle, not a new voyage among the islands and not a standalone fairy tale.
