Tao Te Ching: Lao Tzu
The Way and Its Power and Its Place in Chinese Thought
By Arthur Waley · 2010
Back to CatalogueThis is Arthur Waley's English version of the Tao Te Ching, the short ancient Chinese text attributed to Lao Tzu. The chapters offer compact sayings on the Way, softness, non-action, the uncarved block, and the conduct of rulers who govern by not forcing. Waley adds an introduction and notes that place the verses in late Zhou thought and in the language of the original. There is no narrative plot. The volume is a philosophical poem-cycle in translation with commentary, not a biography of a historical sage and not a manual of later Taoist ritual.
