First published in 1847, this novel is told by Agnes Grey, the daughter of a poor clergyman, who goes out as a governess to support her family. Her first post, with the Bloomfield children, is a daily fight against spoiled pupils and parents who undermine her. At Horton Lodge she teaches the Murray girls, watches the elder, Rosalie, hunt a fashionable marriage, and meets Mr Weston, a curate whose quiet kindness contrasts with the household's vanity. The book is a first-person governess narrative of class and work, not a romance of great houses.
