This history follows Henry V's 1415 invasion of France from the gathering of the army and the siege of Harfleur through the march toward Calais and the battle fought on 25 October near Azincourt. Barker uses English and French administrative records as well as chronicles to describe recruitment, pay, logistics, and the composition of both hosts. She sets the campaign in the politics of a divided France and a king asserting a claim to the French crown. The book treats the battle as the climax of a campaign, and it continues into the return, the lists of the dead, and the making of the victory's reputation.
