Synopsis
First published in 1945, this children's novel presents Stuart, a mouse born to an otherwise human family in New York. He dresses like a gentleman, sails a toy boat in Central Park, teaches school for a day, and befriends the bird Margalo. When Margalo disappears, he sets out north in a miniature car, asking strangers for news of her. Episodes are brief and self-contained. The book is a gentle urban fantasy of scale and quest, not a naturalistic animal story and not a sequel to the author's later farm tale.
