Synopsis
First published in 1930, this Lord Peter Wimsey novel opens with Harriet Vane on trial for the arsenic murder of her former lover, the writer Philip Boyes. Wimsey, convinced of her innocence, investigates the Bohemian circle around the dead man, the terms of a will, and the chemistry of the poisoning, while also declaring his wish to marry the accused. Miss Climpson's enquiry agency does much of the legwork. The book is a detective novel that also begins the Wimsey-Vane courtship, not a courtroom transcript and not a standalone romance.
