First published in 1961, this novel follows Valentine Michael Smith, a human raised by Martians, who is brought to Earth and becomes a legal and religious problem: he is heir to enormous wealth and the carrier of a way of thinking that treats water, sharing, and grokking as sacred. Sheltered by the lawyer Jubal Harshaw, then founding a church of his own, he tests American law, sex, and piety. Supporting figures include nurses, journalists, and disciples. The book is a satirical science-fiction Bildungsroman about a messiah who does not share human categories, not a space-war adventure.
