Strange Defeat

A Statement of Evidence Written in 1940

By Marc Bloch · 2015

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

Written in 1940 after the fall of France and published after the author's death in 1946, this essay examines why the French army and state collapsed in a few weeks. Bloch, a medieval historian and a staff officer in 1939-40, blames habits of command, the gap between staff and line, political division, and a failure to think at the speed of modern war. He writes as a participant, not as a distant strategist. The book is an autopsy of one defeat, not a general history of the Second World War and not a memoir of the Resistance.
