This five-volume historical set surveys Europe from the Italian fifteenth century through Reformation and overseas expansion. Two volumes by Vincent Cronin treat Florence and the later spread of Renaissance culture; others, by J.R. Hale, G.R. Elton, and Boies Penrose, cover the wider European scene, the move from Renaissance to Reformation, and travel and discovery. Subjects include courts, humanism, art, statecraft, and the opening of sea routes. There is no single thesis binding the five books. The collection is a relay of period narratives, not one author's continuous history.
