This five-volume historical set traces Europe from the late Roman centuries to the fifteenth. H. St L. B. Moss treats the birth of the medieval order; later volumes by Geoffrey Barraclough, R.W. Southern, John H. Mundy, and Johan Huizinga cover the ninth and tenth centuries, the making of medieval institutions, the High Middle Ages, and the forms of life and art in late-medieval France and the Netherlands. Politics, faith, and social imagination are the usual subjects. There is no single argument. The collection is a sequence of period studies, not one textbook by Moss alone.
