Synopsis
This selection of Buchan's short fiction gathers adventure, border, and uncanny tales written in the early twentieth century. Typical pieces send gentlemen, clerks, and soldiers into the Scottish hills, the veld, or a London that opens onto older powers; several turn on possession, pagan survival, or a sudden test of nerve. Recurring tones are imperial duty, landscape, and the thinness of ordinary life. Each story is complete in itself. The volume is a sampler of short narratives, not a Richard Hannay novel and not a history of the author's public career.
