First published in 1963, this children's novel follows Barney, a boy staying with his grandmother at the edge of a Kent chalk pit used as a rubbish dump. He falls into the pit and meets Stig, a cave-dwelling man who has made a home from scrap. They share no language, but they hunt, build, and make tools together. Barney's sister Lou half-believes him; grown-ups do not. Later episodes include a burglary, a fox hunt, and a midsummer night when Barney sees Stig among people from another age. The book is a friendship story across time, not a lesson in archaeology.
