First published in 1927, this novel follows Harry Haller, a middle-aged recluse in a German city who thinks of himself as part man and part wolf, isolated from bourgeois comfort and from the jazz age he both scorns and needs. He meets the younger Hermine, the musician Pablo, and the courtesan Maria, who draw him into dancing, drugs, and a promised Magic Theater in which the pieces of his personality are staged. A prefatory Treatise analyses the Steppenwolf type. The book is a psychological novel of crisis and initiation, not a memoir of the author.
