A flu pandemic empties North American cities. The narrative cuts among Arthur Leander, a famous actor who dies onstage in Toronto on the eve of the collapse; the child actress Kirsten, who years later travels the Great Lakes with a Shakespeare company; and the maker of a graphic novel called Station Eleven that survives as a kind of scripture. A prophet's settlement, an airport museum of civilization, and the comic's invented space station bind the timelines. The book is a post-collapse novel about art and memory, not a medical thriller and not a single-survivor adventure.
