Synopsis
Written around 397-400, this thirteen-book work is Augustine's account of his life and conversion, addressed to God. He recalls childhood in North Africa, rhetoric studies in Carthage, a long attachment, Manichaean belief, and the influence of Ambrose in Milan, then the garden crisis that leads him to baptism. The later books turn from narrative to memory, time, and a reading of Genesis. Monica, his mother, is a constant presence. The book is a theological autobiography, not a church history and not a systematic summa of doctrine.
