Rosemary Barton dies of cyanide at her own birthday dinner in a London restaurant; the death is taken for suicide until a year later, when her widower George gathers the same guests for a memorial evening, intending to force the truth. Among those present are Rosemary's sister Iris, the politician Stephen Farraday, his wife Lady Alexandra, and other intimates who had reasons to fear Rosemary's knowledge or her will. Colonel Race watches the table. The novel is a closed-circle murder puzzle about a second dinner that may repeat the first, not a police procedural and not a romance.
