Synopsis
First published in 1957, this memoir recounts Brenan's years in the remote Alpujarra village of Yegen, south of Granada, after the First World War. He describes the mountain economy, feast days, sexual custom, and the lives of neighbours, while visitors from England pass through the house. Chapters treat landscape, food, and the persistence of older Andalusian habits beside modern Spain. The book is a village ethnography written by a resident, not a Civil War history and not a novel of expatriate romance.
