The Source of the Nile. the Lake Regions of Central Africa
The Lake Regions of Central Africa, a Picture of Exploration
By Richard F. Burton · 1993
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1860, this is Burton's narrative of the 1857-59 expedition from Zanzibar inland with John Hanning Speke, mounted to examine the lakes reported by Arab traders and, in the public mind, to settle the Nile's source. The party crosses Unyamwezi, suffers fever and desertion, and reaches Lake Tanganyika, which Burton describes at length, with notes on peoples, trade, and geography. Speke's separate sighting of the northern lake is recorded as a point of dispute. The book mixes itinerary, ethnography, and complaint. It is a travel narrative of exploration, not a later history of the Nile controversy.
