First published in 1939, this novel is set in a California castle-estate owned by Jo Stoyte, an aging millionaire who fears death. He keeps a young mistress, Virginia, and employs Dr Obispo, who experiments on longevity, and Jeremy Pordage, an English scholar hired to catalogue the Hauberk family papers. The papers lead them toward an eighteenth-century English earl who tried to outlive his own century by a diet taken from carp. Satire of Hollywood wealth, California religion, and the wish to refuse age runs through the plot. The book is a comic philosophical novel, not a medical treatise.
