Sophie's World
A Novel About the History of Philosophy
By Jostein Gaarder · 2019
Back to CatalogueSophie Amundsen, a Norwegian teenager, begins to receive anonymous letters that teach the history of Western philosophy, from the natural philosophers through Socrates, Descartes, Kant, and the twentieth century. As the lessons proceed, she and her teacher Alberto Knox discover that they may themselves be figures in a book written for another girl, Hilde. The novel interleaves classroom exposition with a metafictional plot about who is writing whom. Settings are a suburban garden, a cabin, and the pages of the course itself. The book is a didactic novel, not a textbook and not a mystery of the conventional sort.
