In this 1913 novel, Paul Morel grows up in a Nottinghamshire mining village between Walter, a coarse drinking collier, and Gertrude, a mother who pours thwarted hopes into her sons. After the elder son William dies, Paul becomes her emotional center. He works as a clerk, paints, and enters two love affairs: with Miriam Leivers, a farm girl whose spiritual intensity he finds smothering, and with Clara Dawes, an older married woman. Each bond is strained by his inability to leave Gertrude's claim on him. The book is a family and industrial-town novel of desire and dependence, not a tract on mining conditions.
