Synopsis
This is a hybrid of travel narrative, novel, and essay set mainly in the Australian interior. The narrator travels with Arkady, who maps Aboriginal songlines ahead of a railway, and meets people for whom ancestral tracks are both geography and law. Interleaved chapters gather notes on nomads, restlessness, and the idea that walking and singing create the land. Fact, conversation, and invented scenes are not firmly separated. The book is an inquiry into song as a map of country, not a guidebook and not an ethnography in academic form.
