The Song of Songs
Reproduced from a Copy of the First Golden Cockerel Edition
By Sebastian Carter · 2017
Back to CatalogueThis is the biblical Song of Songs, a sequence of ancient Hebrew love poems in which a woman and a man praise one another's bodies, seek each other through streets and gardens, and speak as bride and bridegroom. Imagery of vineyards, spices, gazelles, and the city of Jerusalem carries desire and absence. There is no legal or historical plot; the voices alternate and sometimes include a chorus of daughters of Jerusalem. Later readers have treated the book as allegory of God and Israel or of Christ and the Church. It is lyric dialogue, not a narrative history.
