First published in 1927, this is a set of fictionalized portraits of people the narrator claims to have known. Each chapter is a short character study: a schoolmaster, a diplomat, a social climber, an aesthete, a bore, drawn with comic malice and an eye for manners and class. Fact and invention are mixed so that names and incidents cannot be taken as straight memoir. There is no continuous plot. The book is a suite of satirical sketches from the diplomatic and social world of the early twentieth century, not a history of the Foreign Office and not a chronological autobiography.
