Arthur Dent, last seen hitchhiking after Earth's destruction, finds himself back on a planet that looks like home and should not exist. He meets Fenchurch, a woman troubled by the same vanished memory of the planet's last day. Together they try to understand why Earth has reappeared, what the dolphins meant by their farewell, and where a rumoured last message from God might be found. Ford Prefect, Marvin, and other familiar travellers re-enter as the search leaves the reconstructed Earth. The book is the fourth Hitchhiker novel, a comic science-fiction narrative of return and unfinished questions rather than a first-contact tale.
