First published in 1967, this children's historical novel follows Smith, a twelve-year-old pickpocket in eighteenth-century London. He steals a document from an old gentleman who is murdered moments later, and he cannot read the paper that several parties then hunt. A blind magistrate, his daughter, and the rookeries of Newgate and the road to the gallows draw Smith into a plot of treason, inheritance, and sudden kindness. Fog, taverns, and highway danger supply the setting. The book is a picaresque adventure of a street child, not a social history of the Georgian poor.
